1. Start up India Summit to be held in Dubai. This is the first such “Start-Up Summit” being held in the UAE. The aim is to provide a shared platform for the Start-up ecosystem in both India and UAE for greater collaboration, exchange ideas, interact with academia, investors and industry. |
2. Paytm bank has appointed ‘Renu Satti’ as the CEO of 'Paytm Payments Bank'. Currently, Satti is the executive and vice-president of business at Paytm. Paytm received the final licence from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for its payments bank entity. Now, Paytm will launch Paytm Payments Bank on 23rd May 2017. |
3. PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate India’s longest river bridge 'Dhola-Sadiya bridge' in Assam on May 26. It will bolster the road connectivity in the Northeast as the bridge will be used by people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh besides defence forces extensively. The length of the Dhola-Sadiya bridge is 9.15 km and is built cross river Lohit at the easternmost tip of Assam. Dhola-Sadiya bridge will be the longest bridge in India overtaking the Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai. |
4.Harsh Vardhan gets additional charge of Environment Ministry. The President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee as advised by the Prime Minister has directed that Dr. Harsh Vardhan should be assigned the charge of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, in addition to his existing portfolios. |
5.Haryana launches e-textbook portal for school students. Students can now download school books instantly from the e-textbook portal of the Haryana School Education Board which was launched today. Inaugurating the website, Chief Minister Manohar Lal said as of now, 26 textbooks of classes IX to XII have been uploaded on the portal and these can be easily converted into audio files. These included 11 books of class IX, nine books of class X and three books each of classes XI and XII. The Chief Minister said, the initiative is an important step towards realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dream of Digital India. He said, the portal also provides a facility to highlight certain portions of the e-textbooks making it easier for students to study. |
6.The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus stand at Lajpat Nagar has been equipped with AC facility. The AC has been installed by a Japanese multinational air conditioner manufacturing company in cooperation with a private agency which has the advertisement right on DTC's bus stands |
7. Chitale committee on de-siltation of Ganga has recommended a slew of measures. They include study of reach wise sediment transport processes along with establishing annual sediment budgets to guide de-silting activities.It has recommended that a technical institute may be entrusted with conduct of the sediment budget, morphological and flood routing studies that would examine and confirm the necessity of the de-silting. The committee was constituted in July 2016 by the Ministry of Water Resources under the chairmanship of Madhav Chitale, expert member of National Ganga River Basin Authority to prepare guidelines for de-siltation of river Ganga from Bhimgauda in Uttarakhand to Farakka in West Bengal. |
8. Anurag Mehrotra appointed as the new MD of Ford India. Mehrotra’s elevation follows a pattern of foreign carmakers appointing Indians to lead local operations. Recently, BMW appointed Vikram Pawah as its president while Audi appointed the Indian-origin Rahil Ansari as head of Indian operations. All these three top executives are 45-year-old or younger. 9.China, ASEAN agree on framework for South China Sea code of conduct. The Ministry said senior officials have completed the negotiations of the draft code of conduct (COC) framework, ahead of the mid-2017 timeline which leaders of ASEAN and China had set. According to a joint press statement issued at the end of the one-day senior officials' meeting, this draft COC framework will be submitted to the foreign ministers for consideration. China and the ASEAN had been hoping to agree on the framework this year, 15 years after committing to draft it. |
10.India ranked 24th in the revised World Tourism Organisation UNWTO rankings by jumbping 16 places. UNWTO is the United Nation's agency managing promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism and its barometer ranks countries in terms of their ITAs- comprising both foreign tourist arrivals as well as non- resident arrivals. So far only the figures of foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) were compiled in India. |
