1. According to World Bank development report, India ranks 120th among 131 nations in women workforce. While overall job creation has been limited, most of the new ones have been grabbed by men given the social norms. As per the report, the participation level has been dropping since 2005, despite having 42% women who are graduates. Jobs for Indian women remain primarily in the agriculture sector. The share of women in services and industry is less than 20%. Indian women’s workforce participation is closer to Pakistan (24.6 percent) and the Arab world (23.3 percent) while neighboring Countries Nepal (79.9 percent) and China (63.9 percent) are leagues ahead. |
2. Twelve MOU's and agreements have inked between India and Germany. The bilateral delegation-level talks presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel.The agreements inked included nine joint declarations of intent (JDIs) and three memoranda of understanding. The agreements include collaboration in the field of digitalization, skill development, and cooperation in cyber policy. Besides, the two nations also agreed to resume the free trade talks between India and the European Union. |
3. IIT Kharagpur develops new tech to make cheaper, pollution-free bio fuel. Researchers at IIT Kharagpur have developed a new technology which will change the way bio-fuel is manufactured by making the process cheaper, quicker and pollution-free. Professor of Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering, Dr Rintu Banerjee today said, the technique will ensure relatively quicker production of bio-fuel and the process is completely green. It can change the future of bio fuel manufacturing in India and make it more cost effective, she said. Dr. Banerjee also said the technology is ready for industry use. Spokesperson of IIT Kharagpur today said the 'soil-to-soil' manufacturing technology developed for bio-energy is in the process of being patented. |
4. According to CSO report , GDP grows 6.1% year-on-year during January-March period. The GDP for the full year (2016-17 ) came in at 7.1 per cent in line with official estimate compared to a revised growth figure of 8 per cent in financial year 2016-17. During the quarter, the agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors grew at 5.2 per cent, mining and quarrying at 6.4 per cent, manufacturing at 5.3 per cent, electricity, gas, water supply and other utility services at 6.1 per cent, trade, hotels, transport and communication at 6.5 per cent; financial, real estate and professional services at 2.2 per cent, and public administration, defence and other services at 17 per cent. However, the construction sector shrank 3.7 per cent. |
5. World observes No Tobacco Day on 31st May. This year World No Tobacco Day, WNTD, is focusing on the theme "tobacco as a threat to development". This theme has been set by the World Health Organization, WHO. The campaign aims to demonstrate the threats that the tobacco industry poses to sustainable development, including the health and economic well-being of citizens in all countries. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. |
6. Pentagon successfully tests intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) defense system for first time. The U.S. military on Tuesday cheered a successful, first-ever missile defense test involving a simulated attack by an intercontinental ballistic missile, in a major milestone for a program meant to defend against a mounting North Korean threat. The U.S. military fired an ICBM-type missile from the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands toward the waters just south of Alaska. It then fired a missile to intercept it from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. he Pentagon said the test was long-planned but it comes amid increased tensions with North Korea. The test comes after Pyongyang fired its ninth missile this year. |
7 . Amitabh Bachchan will lead new campaign called Darwaza Band. The government launched new campaign called Darwaza Band for promotion of toilet usage in the rural areas across the country.The campaign is being rolled out countrywide immediately after the launch. It is designed to encourage behaviour change in men who have toilets but are not using them. The campaign also features actor, Anushka Sharma, who will be seen encouraging women to stand up for this issue in their villages and assume a leadership role. |
8.Prakash Javadekar has launched University Grants Commission (UGC) App to fight against ragging in New Delhi. This mobile app will help students register complaints to counter the menace of ragging. This app will work on android system on which students can log in and register their complaints immediately. |
9. According to ICC Rankings, Kohli only Indian in top 10 ODI rankings. The top five ODI teams are close to each other with South Africa (122), Australia (118), India (117), New Zealand (114) and England (112).India captain Virat Kohli is the lone cricketer from the country to feature in the top 10 of the ICC Players Rankings for ODIs as he managed to hold on to his third spot in the batsman's chart. The intense competition in the individual rankings justifies the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy's significance as players from the eight participating teams feature prominently in it and not much separates the top players in the fray. The top three batsmen - South Africa's AB de Villiers (874 rating points), Australian David Warner (871) and Kohli (852) are separated by just 22 points. Among other Indians to feature in the top 20 of the ICC Players Ranking for ODI batsmen are Rohit Sharma (12th), Mahendra Singh Dhoni (13th) and Shikhar Dhawan, who dropped a place to 15th. |
