4. China to launch its own encyclopedia as a rival to Wikipedia. China has the plan to launch its own online encyclopedia next year rivaling Wikipedia and Britannica (Britain’s Encyclopaedia). The main objective of this project is to guide public thought. China fears that its citizens who use Wikipedia are being corrupted by foreign influences. Around 20,000 scholars and academics have been tasked to create more than 300,000 entries before launch in 2018. |

6. Supreme Court rejects plea to make Hindi compulsory in class I to VIII. It refused to entertain a plea seeking a direction to the Centre, the states and union territories to make Hindi compulsory for students across the country to promote national unity. The bench, comprising Chief Justice J.S. Khehar, Justices D Y Chandrachud and Sanjay Kishan Kaul, said the people speaking other languages may also start asking why their languages are not being taught. The bench added that the government could look into it. |
7. Government demotes chief executives of Punjab National Bank and Bank of India . Sunil Mehta, executive director of Corporation Bank would be the new CEO of Punjab National Bank while D B Mohapatra, executive director of Canara Bank would be appointed as CEO of Bank of India. In a strong signal to state-run banks top executives to shape up or ship out, the government demoted two top chief executives - Usha Ananthasubramaniam of Punjab National Bank and Bank of India's Melwyn Rego. While Ananthasubramaniam has been transferred to a small lender Allahabad Bank, Rego has been shunted out to Syndicate Bank. |

9. HC directs Rajasthan govt to install scanners at highway toll plazas to check cattle smuggling. It was hearing a petition filed by Gau Raksha Dal which sought a check on the illegal transportation of cattle in the state. A division bench of Rajasthan High Court asked the State Government to submit a compliance report in this regard after two weeks. The bench observed that smuggling of cattle has seen a spurt and it needs to be stopped at any cost. |
