2. Facebook has launched its 'Express Wi-Fi' commercially in India . the service is now available via 700 hotspots across four states of Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Meghalaya. For the expansion of service, Facebook has announced a partnership with Bharti Airtel for setting up an additional 20,000 hotspots covering millions of Indians over the next few months. |
3. Heather Wilson appointed as Trump's Air Force secretary. The vote yesterday was 76-22 in favor of Wilson becoming the top civilian overseeing the Air Force. The 22 "no" votes all came from Democrats. She is a graduate of the US Air Force Academy and former Rhodes scholar. Wilson, 56, has also served on the National Security Council under President George HW Bush. |

7. Jharkhand government partners with Oracle to boost IT infrastructure. "We are ramping up IT infrastructure in the State and have initiated programs in this direction. We are undertaking continued efforts to bridge the gap between the government and the citizens through use of IT,” Raghubar Das, Chief Minister of Jharkhand, said at an event in New Delhi. He added that the government of Jharkhand and Oracle will jointly explore and identify areas in which Oracle’s cloud-based technologies can be used to support entrepreneurship. |
8. Pakistan and Afghanistan plan on using Google Maps to help resolve a border dispute . At least eight civilians were killed on both sides in fighting that began when a Pakistani census team accompanied by soldiers visited disputed villages along the southern border on Friday. Pakistan inherited its 2,400-km border with its western neighbour when it gained independence from the British Empire in 1947, but Afghanistan has never formally recognised the frontier. And while official Afghan maps reflect the so-called ‘Durand Line’, many nationalists believe the true border of their country ends at the Indus river that runs though Pakistan and gave India its name. |
9. Boxer Kavinder Singh Bisht qualifies for World Championships. Indian boxer Kavinder Singh Bisht qualified for the World Championships in the 52 kilogram category after getting a walkover against Malaysia's Salam Abdul Kasim at the Asian Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, today. With Bisht, India now have five boxers confirmed for the World Championships. They are the bronze medal winning duo of Vikas Krishan in 75 and Amit Phangal in 49 kilogram weight categories and silver-medallists Shiva Thapa in 60 and Sumit Sangwan in 91 kilogram categories. |
10. Sachin Tendulkar conferred with Fellowship Award 7th annual Asian Awards in UK. The ceremony, which celebrates excellence in the global Asian community, also paid tribute to Indian actor Om Puri. The award for outstanding achievement in Cinema was posthumously conferred on Om Puri who died earlier this year at the age of 66. India’s playback singer Adnan Sami won the award for 'Outstanding achievement in Music'. |
