2. Lakshmi Vilas Bank (LVB) has appointed B K Manjunath as a part-time chairman for three years. Lakshmi Vilas Bank has informed the stock exchange that subsequent to an approval granted by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Board of Directors of the bank at their meeting have co-opted B K Manjunath as additional director in the category of Non-Executive and Independent Director. |
3. Axis bank has become the first bank to introduce biodegradable cards in India. The card has the look and feel of regular plastic cards and can be used in PoS terminals and ATMs. Biodegradable cards can also be recycled. |
4. Goa government has launched monsoon tourism to attract visitors. The Goa tourism department has launched a number of activities for travellers, providing much more fun than being on the beaches. The department said, the activities were launched as Southwest Monsoon is advancing over the state making it dangerous to venture into the sea. The activities include 'Sao Joao', an activity of jumping in the water, playing in the mud, trekking through the Western Ghats and sweets fest. |
5. SBI cuts interest rate on home loans above Rs 75 lakh by 10 bps. The State Bank of India, country’s largest lender cut interest rate to 8.60 percent. For salaried women borrowers, the loans will be offered at 8.55 percent. SBI, in a statement said that the new rates will be effective from June 15. The home loan rates offered are lowest in the industry. The statement added that taking a cue from the recent RBI reduction in risk weightage on home loans, SBI is passing on the benefit to its customers by reducing its interest rates on home loan above Rs 75 lakh. |
6. UK gets its first female Sikh MP in general election results. Britain today got its first female Sikh MP and first turban-wearing MP as the UK general election results threw up a small increase in the number of Indian-origin MPs in the House of Commons. The latest tally indicates the Labour party has improved its record from five to seven MPs, with the Tories retaining their five Indian-origin MPs taking the total number up from 10 in the 2015 general election to 12. Labour's Preet Kaur Gill won her Birmingham Edgbaston seat by polling 24,124 votes, defeating her Conservative party rival by 6,917 votes. |
7. Amazon launches Alexa-enabled smartwatch in India. Alexa, an intelligent virtual assistant, and will be available on e-commerce portal Yerha.com. Priced at Rs 13,900, "iMCO Watch" includes alarm, alternate timezone, calendar, music Bluetooth control, notifications, step counter, heart rate monitor, stopwatch, timer, weather and speed dial features. The smartwatch is compatible with both iPhones (running iOS v9.0 and above) and Android (running on v5.0 and above) devices. The smartwatch features a stainless steel case body, AMOLED full-circle display, 1GB RAM, 8GB flash memory and is dust and water resistant. |
8. India, Pakistan become full members of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). India's membership was strongly pushed by Russia while Pakistan's entry into the grouping was backed by China. With the expansion of the grouping, the SCO will now represent over 40 per cent of humanity and nearly 20 per cent of the global GDP. As an SCO member, India is expected to have a bigger say in pressing for concerted action in dealing with terrorism as well as on issues relating to security and defence in the region. |
9. Muttiah Muralidaran is the first Sri Lankan to be inducted into ICC Hall of Fame . The Sri Lankan spin great was honored during the innings break of the India versus Sri Lanka Champions Trophy match at The Oval. He became the first player from Sri Lanka and the 83rd overall to be inducted into the Hall of Fame when ICC CEO Dave Richardson presented him with a commemorative framed cap. |

Virat Kohli is the only indian sports person to feature in the world’s 100 highest paid athletes in the latest Forbes list Virat Kohli has been ranked 89th on the 2017 Forbes list of ‘The World’s highest paid athletes’ with a total pay of $ 22 million that includes $ three million from salary and winnings and another 19 million from endorsements. The list has been topped by Ronaldo with a total pay of 93 million dollars. American basketball star LeBron James comes in at the second spot, followed by Argentine footballer Lionel Messi (3rd) and tennis star Roger Federer (4th). Tennis star Serena Williams, who comes in at the 51 spot with $ 27 million, the lone female athlete to make the cut this year. |
