2. Google has launched Android 'Oreo'. An upcoming update to Google’s Android software will be known as Oreo, extending Google’s tradition of naming each version after a sweet treat. Google anointed the software Monday after spending the past few months referring to it as “Android O”. Oreo boasts several new features over current version Nougat, including the ability to respond to notifications directly on a phone’s home screen and the ability to access apps without installing them on a device. The free software is scheduled to be released this fall, most likely after making its debut on a new Pixel phone. |
3. Prakash Javadekar has launched the ‘Swasth Bachche, Swasth Bharat’ Programme . Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) Prakash Javadekar launched the ‘Swasth Bachche, Swasth Bharat’ Programme in Kochi, Kerala. Javadekar also launched the Health and Fitness Profile Card along with the programme. The programme is an initiative of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) to prepare a physical Health and Fitness Profile Card for more than 12 lakhs of Kendriya Vidyalaya students. |
4. ICMR, Ministry of Health sign pact with S Koreas IVI for vaccine. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Union Ministry of Health inked a pact with the International Vaccine Institute (IVI), South Korea to collaborate on vaccine research and development. The ICMR is the apex body in the country for the formulation, coordination, and promotion of biomedical research. India officially became a signatory to the treaty of the Seoul-based organisation International Vaccine Institute(IVI) in 2012. |
5.NABARD sanctions Rs 1,350-cr loan to Rajasthan government. The National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned a loan assistance of Rs 1,349.55 crore to the Rajasthan government for creation of rural infrastructure in the state under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF). The sanction includes assistance for construction of two rural drinking water supply projects, strengthening/ rehabilitation of 1,614 rural roads and modernisation of three major irrigation projects.An amount of Rs 599.84 crore has been sanctioned for rehabilitation of 1,614 roads, covering all 33 districts of Rajasthan, Rs 469.54 crore for providing potable water to population of 419 villages of Jalore district and Rs 280.17 crore for rehabilitation and modernisation of 3 major irrigation projects located in Udaipur, Banswara and Dungarpur districts. |

7. ONGC board approves HPCL takeover of 51.11% stake. The board of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp, ONGC, has given 'in-principle' approval to acquire government's 51(point)11 per cent stake in Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd. The ONGC board at its meeting in New Delhi on Monday constituted a committee of directors to examine various aspects of the acquisition and to provide its recommendations to the board of directors. The government last month had approved sale of its 51.11 per cent stake in oil refiner HPCL to India's largest oil producer ONGC. The deal will be completed within a year. The government had also constituted a committee - headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and comprising oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan and road minister Nitin Gadkari to work out the modalities of the sale. |
8. Former Manipur Chief Minister and a member of the first Lok Sabha Rishang Keishing has died at 96. Former Manipur Chief Minister and a member of the first Lok Sabha Rishang Keishing passed away today following brief illness in Imphal. The veteran Congress leader was 96. Keishing, a Naga, served as the chief minister of Manipur from 1980 to 1988 and from 1994 to 1997. Doctors attending him at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) said, Keishing passed away around 8.15 pm due to multiple organ failure. He was hospitalised on July 1 after his health condition worsened.He is survived by two sons and four daughters. |
9. Banking operations in public banks disrupted due to nation-wide strike on 22nd August. Normal banking operations have been hit as public sector bank employees went on a one-day nationwide strike today to protest against the government’s proposed consolidation move. Services like deposits and withdrawal at bank branches, cheque clearance, NEFT and RTGS transactions have been affected. However, operations at private lenders were almost normal. The strike has been called by all unions under the aegis of the United Forum of Bank Unions. Besides protest against consolidation move of the government, other demands include no write-off policy for non-performing assets (NPAs) of corporate loans, declaring wilful default of loans as criminal offence and implementation of recommendations of Parliamentary Committee on recovery of NPAs. |
