1. Saudi Arabia Becomes First Country To Grant Citizenship To A Robot. During a strange conference in front of a crowd of hundreds of delegates, humanity got a glimpse into its future, as Saudi Arabia granted citizenship to a robot. Known as Sophia, the android is the first to be granted rights of this kind. But what “citizenship” actually means for a robot is, clearly, unchartered territory and so no one really knows what it means or what it will convey, but some suggest that it means she now has more freedom than real women in Saudi Arabia. The robot, and the AI that runs her, has been developed by Hanson Robotics, a firm based in Hong Kong. On hearing the news Sophia was pleased, we think. |
2.Chile named best country to visit in 2018. Lonely Planet has ranked Chile as the number one country to visit next year in its much anticipated Best in Travel 2018 list. The travel guide company, which produces content in more than 14 languages and has over 13 million followers on social media, published the 13th edition of its annual list of the top 10 countries every traveler should have on their bucket list for 2018 yesterday. Chile was the only South American country to earn a spot on the list and ranked first in the Countries categories which also included Portugal, New Zealand, China and South Africa. 3. Indian Army observed the 70th Infantry Day on 27th October 2017.. Wellington Military Station celebrated 71st Infantry Day on 27 October by organising a solemn but impressive wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial of the Madras Regimental Centre. Wreaths were laid in the Honour of these infantry men who made supreme sacrifice for the nation. Infantry Day is celebrated on 27 Oct 2017 since on this momentous day in 1947 the first contingent of infantary landed at Srinagar Airfield and fought a courageous battle to save Kashmir Valley from intruders. |

5.Piyush Goyal launches Railways' first set of solar plants in Delhi. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal today launched the railways' first set of solar plants with a total capacity of 5 megawatt peak (MWp), an ambitious project aimed at reducing the national transporter's carbon footprint. The project is part of the government's National Solar Mission in which Indian Railways plans to commission 1,000 MWp solar plants across its network. The minister launched the plants at the inauguration of the 'International Conference on Green Initiatives and Railway Electrification. |
6. India and ADB has signed $65.5 Million Loan to support Coastal Protection in Karnataka. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India signed a $65.5 million loan agreement yesterday here in the national capital to continue interventions to check coastal erosion on the Western Coast in Karnataka. The loan is the Second Tranche of a $250 million financing facility under the Sustainable Coastal Protection and Management Investment Program. The financing will be used to address the immediate coastal protection needs and for strengthening institutional capacity of Karnataka’s Public Works, Ports and Inland Water Transport Department. |
7. India Sri Lanka ink MoU for Housing Project Deal. Sri Lanka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with India for the construction of 1200 houses in Hambantota. India will provide an assistance of Rs. 600 million for building the houses. The agreement aims to help low income, homeless and landless beneficiaries of the area. |
8.Eminent Malayalam Writer, Punathil Kunjabdulla passed away. Punathil Kunjabdulla, award-winning Malayalam writer passed away at the age of 77 in Kozhikode. Punathil was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his work, ‘Smarakasilakal’ in 1980. He also won the Kerala Sathiya Akademi award for the same novel in 1978 as well as for ‘Malamukalile Abdulla’ in 1980. |
9.EDII bags AICTE award for supporting start-ups. Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) has received an award from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for supporting start-ups. The premier Institute received the award for its contribution towards promoting and mentoring technology start-ups. Given during the International Science Festival’s Start-up Summit – 2017 at Chennai, the AICTE awards recognise outstanding achievement by academic and research institutes of India in actively promoting and supporting innovation and start-ups in their campuses. The summit also acknowledged various upcoming start-ups through its nationwide start-up contest. |
10. Puducherry becomes new associate member of BCCI. Puducherry is now the newest associate member of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after the Committee of Administrators (CoA) accepted their proposal. The Cricket Association of Puducherry (CAP) will represent the Union Territory ahead of the Pondicherry Cricket Association - Kalaimani and Pondicherry Cricket Association - Velmurugan, who were the other two parties who had staked their claims for an associate membership. The final decision in favour of the CAP was taken by the Supreme Court appointed CoA. |
