1. Soumya Swaminathan Appointed Deputy Director General of WHO.

The World Health Organization (WHO) appointed Soumya Swaminathan one of two deputy directors general, the first time such a post has been ever created within the organisation. The position is also the highest post held by an Indian in the WHO. Dr. Swaminathan is currently the Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

2. India and Djibouti have agreed to establish regular political consultations.

India and Djibouti have agreed to establish regular political consultations at the level of the Foreign Office. It was decided during the delegation level talks between President Ram Nath Kovind and President of Djibouti Ismail Omar Guelleh. An agreement in this regard was signed in the presence of of both Presidents.

3. Rajnish Kumar appointed as chairman of SBI.

Rajnish Kumar was on Wednesday appointed chairman of the largest public sector bank, the State Bank of India (SBI), replacing Arundhati Bhattacharya, who completes her one-year extended term.Mr. Kumar, who is now the managing director of the SBI, faces the daunting task of addressing the issue of huge non-performing assets (NPA) of the bank. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Mr. Kumar’s appointment for three years from the date of taking charge on or after October 7

4. Karnataka unveils scheme ‘Mathru Purna’ to feed 12 lakh pregnant women.

The scheme aims at reducing under-nutrition among women and children, the chief minister said while announcing the launch, serving food to pregnant women in the banquet hall of Vidhan Soudha, the state secretariat. Besides nutritional supplements, counselling and other maternity benefits will also be provided at the Anganwadi centres under the scheme. A provision of Rs 302 crore has been made by the state government during the 2017–18 financial year for the implementation of the scheme in all the 30 districts of Karnataka.

5.India’s First ITI for Divyangans in Assam.

Foundation stone for the first ever Industrial Training Institute for the Divyangans exclusively was laid at Dibrugarh ITI Complex at Borboruah, Dibrugarh by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. As per the guidelines of National Council for Vocational Training, the ITI will have sixty seats for three different trades with 20 seats per trade.

6. Centre has appointed High-level committee for proper management of water resources in the N-E region headed by Rajiv Kumar.

Centre has set up a high-level committee for proper management of water resources in the North-Eastern region . The Committee will be headed by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar. It will facilitate optimising benefits of appropriate water management in the form of hydro-electric power, agriculture, bio-diversity conservation, reduced flood damage erosion, inland water transport, forestry, fishery and eco tourism.

7. Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson win Nobel Prize for chemistry.

Scientists Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson have won the Nobel Chemistry Prize on Wednesday for the development of cryo-electron microscopy. It’s a method of simplifying and improving the imaging of biomolecules.

8. Rainer Weiss, Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne have awarded 2017 Nobel Prize in physics.

The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics went to three American scientists Rainer Weiss, Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne for their decisive contributions to the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) detector and the observation of gravitational waves Weiss will receive half the prize and remaining half shared equally by two Caltech scientists Dr. Barish, (Professor of Physics) and Dr. Thorne (Professor of Theoretical Physics).

10. Uttarakhand CM inaugurates Mudra Protasahan Abhiyaan in Dehradun.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat inaugurated the Mudra Protasahan Abhiyaan in Dehradun on Wednesday. Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister stated that this campaign is to encourage young entrepreneurs. this campaign is to instill a sense of trust that self employment can act as medium of their economic growth. He also stated that the beneficiaries across the country have availed the benefits of this scheme.
