Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday addressed the doyens of Indian industry at the annual general meeting (AGM) of Ficci, his first address to an AGM of a national business association after becoming the premier.
Prime Minister Modi said that even after 70 years of Independence, the common man always has been at loggerheads with the system. The poor has to struggle for getting small benefits. Right form opening a bank account to availing LPG connection, the poor had to run from hear and there. He went on to add that his government has worked towards ending these hurdles.
Prime Minister Modi said some systemic hurdles prevented the common man from availing government benefits like buying LPG cylinders. He said his government worked towards eliminating those hurdles.
More than 30 crore poor have got bank accounts under the Jan Dhan Yojana, the Prime Minister said, adding that a study has found that inflation had come down in rural areas where such accounts have been opened.
The Prime Minister congratulated Ficci for completing 90 years of its establishment. The Ficci was set in 1927 which was a time when Simon Commission was sent to Inida, he said.
Prime Minister Modi attacked the previous Congress-led UPA regime, saying that banks were pressured to give loans worth thousands of crores of rupees to select industrialists in a scam bigger than 2G, coal and Commonwealth Games scams.
The Prime Minister said loans extended to select industrialists by pressuring banks was a loot of public money.
Calling it a "scam", he said this was bigger than the Commonwealth Games, 2G telecom spectrum allocation and coal block allocation scams.
He added that the uproar over NPAs that we are seeing these days, it is the biggest liability transferred to us by the previous government. Modi said his government is formulating policies keeping in mind the need of businesses, abolishing archaic and obsolete laws.
Industry, he said, had been long demanding Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the BJP-led government implemented it and introduced measures like anti-profiteering to see that industry passes on the benefit of lower taxes to the people.
Under the Mudra scheme, over Rs 4 lakh crore guarantee-less loans have been given to about 9.75 lakh youth for business, leading to 3 crore new entrepreneurs being created since launching of the scheme.
